A Year Gone By

Stay a while the voice said to me
I answered back too great the fee
But then I heard sweet opera's song
And reveled in beauty for which I long

Linger a while longer the voice said to me
But why said I with not much to see
Then beautiful child entered my thought
And brought such joy never to be bought

And still the face of the lady sublime
With voice so rare and not one to mime
Remains with me still and fills my heart
With pleasure and joy I cannot part

The voice speaks... not to despair
But I say that I am beyond repair
The advancing years have taken their toll
And constant pain inhabits body and soul

The gait goes astray the balance is off
Fingers swollen and sore, sound gone soft
So why go on with this to increase
When darkness calls to render peace

Peace may be but no thoughts to abide
To know of this peace comes not with the tide
So is it really there this peace that I seek
Life in the present offers nary a peek

The nights grow long and cold settles in
Time to think of what might have been
All dreams of love that have gone astray
And things undone to stay that way
